A few leagues from the Commandery of Ste-Eulalie, climbing back up onto the plateau in the direction of Roquefort, the proud tower of Viala dominates the vast plain of the Larzac.
27 metres high, it's purpose was to protect the inhabitants of Viala, who, too few in number to build their own ramparts, and too distant to take shelter at Sainte-Eulalie, built this imposing refuge with the agreement of the Commander. In case of danger, there was enough room for everyone, their belongings and their animals to shelter.
The Tourist Information Point is on the ground floor, and from here the guided visit will take you right up to the sentries' walkway on the roof from where, on a clear day, there is a superb panorama.
