1190 - 1192 3rd Crusade - Richard the Lionheart conquers Cyprus
1204 4th Crusade - taking of Constantinople

1229 6th Crusade led by Frederic II

The Templars

1120 A few knights establish themselves at Jerusalem on the esplanade of the Temple - Hugues de Payns founds the Order of the Temple
1129 The Council of Troyes recognises the foundation of the Order and of the Rule of the "Poor Knights of Christ"
1307 Arrest of the French Templars on the orders of Philippe le Bel
1312 At the Council of Vienna, Pope Clement V abolishes the Order of the Temple and grants its property to the Order of the Hospital, except in part of the Iberian peninsula
1314 The grand-master Jacques de Molay and the other leaders are burnt on the Ile de la Cité in Paris

The Hospitallers

c. 1070 Merchants from Amalfi create an hospice at Jerusalem to lodge and treat the sick and pilgrims
1099 Conquest of Jerusalem by the crusaders
1113 The religious Order of the Hospitallers is recognised by Pope Pascal II
1130 - 1140 The Order takes on a military aspect
1187 Jerusalem re-taken by the Muslims. The Hospitallers retreat to Acre
1291 With the loss of Acre, the Hospitallers retreat to Cyprus
1306 - 1309 The Hospitallers conquer Rhodes
1522 The Hospitallers are expelled from Rhodes by the Ottomans
1530 Charles V gives the isle of Malta to the Hospitallers
1565 Siege of Malta by the Ottomans. The Hospitallers emerge victorious
1571 The Order distinguishes itself in the naval battle of Lepante against the Ottomans.
1792 In France, the Order's property is seized and becomes State Property
1798 Napoleon Bonaparte takes Malta and expels the Hospitallers
1834 The Order re-establishes itself in Rome
It abandons its military functions and devotes itself to its charitable vocation of treating the sick
1924 The Order is once again recognised by the French government
Today The Order numbers 11,000 members divided among 6 grand priories and 41 associations. It has ambassadors in 82 nations
